Holly's Holograph . . . films, Oscars, predictions, commentary

BAFTA's nomination process includes a preliminary long list of nominees that comes from the membership at large -- unlike AMPAS, where the nominees come from either the various craft branches (actors, editors, directors, etc.) or committees. Both organizations' best picture nominees are determined by the entire membership. Within the various BAFTA categories, five preferences are indicated by the corresponding academy chapter, i.e., screenwriters, cinematographers. When the final slate is announced on January 18, most of the preferred choices will make it onto the ballot.

Here's a quick look at those films capturing the most number of semifinalist mentions in the long list:

15: Black Swan, The King's Speech
14: Inception, Made in Dagenham
13: The Social Network
12: Alice in Wonderland, The Fighter, Shutter Island, True Grit
11: 127 Hours, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Town

Awards are distributed on February 13.
