BAFTA's nomination process includes a preliminary long list of nominees that comes from the membership at large -- unlike AMPAS, where the nominees come from either the various craft branches (actors, editors, directors, etc.) or committees. Both organizations' best picture nominees are determined by the entire membership. Within the various BAFTA categories, five preferences are indicated by the corresponding academy chapter, i.e., screenwriters, cinematographers. When the final slate is announced on January 18, most of the preferred choices will make it onto the ballot.
